The Dardos Award is given for recognition of cultural, ethical, literary, and personal values transmitted in the form of creative and original writing. These stamps were created with the intention of promoting fraternization between bloggers, a way of showing affection and gratitude for work that adds value to the Web.
Thank-you to Chrissy at Spectrum Hope for giving me such an honour. I haven’t posted the award before now because I am so humbled by it. Honestly, I started blogging because I just couldn’t get my thoughts organized. (I’m not sure I have yet!) It’s grown into something much more along the way though. A source of friendship, a source of comfort, a source of hope.
I find that blogging has allowed me to focus more on the great things about my children, instead of always focused on test scores, developmental issues and chasing diagnoses, doctors and specialists. I still do all those things but I have found a balance between them and I am grateful for that.
The other thing blogging has done is to remind me that I am not alone on this journey. As a parent, I think it is common to think you are the “only one” dealing with a particular issue. Add a child with special needs to that mix and see how fast you are the only one.
The real push for me to begin blogging was when did genetics counselling for Nathan. The doctor mentioned Fragile X and although she didn’t think it was a good “fit”, I looked into it anyhow.
What I found was two things: what Fragile X (the genetic condition) is and that there is an entire community supporting each other along the path. I found a welcome home inside the FX community that continues to be a source of comfort, knowledge and wisdom that I rely on daily. I credit Beth at Fragile What for keeping me sane as we waited 6 months for test results and holding me up when we got an autism diagnosis.
It amazes me that in our time of great need, it was mostly ‘virtual’ strangers that provided the shoulder and support required. Our real life friends couldn’t understand, though I’m sure they wanted to.
And now, on to passing on the awards:
1) Accept the award by posting it on your blog along with the name of the person that has granted the award and a link to his/her blog. [Note: Don’t forget to copy and paste the award jpeg itself to include on your own blog!]
2) Pass the award to another five blogs that are worthy of this acknowledgment, remembering to contact each of them to let them know they have been selected for this award.
